... if you've run a red light unknowingly? What with highway hypnosis, it's not a detail you'd be able to recall later. I do know one time I had a passenger point out that I blew through a stop sign in front of a police station (it was a two-way stop giving the freaking parking lot the right of way over the actual road. Plus the sign was missing its reflective-ness) so, you know, shit happens.

I sometimes do, but it's only ever with obscured signs or lights. The thing about driving for a while is that your brain can see and recognize red lights, stop signs, traffic, brake lights etc.....to "break" the driving trance. A psych friend of mine explained it to me. If you try and drive at "full focus and attention" in the literal sense then any journey longer than an hour or two would mentally kill you. However if you never develop the skill and confidence behind the wheel to gain that ability of coming back to attention when you see a stop sign? Then that's where the problems come up......

Fair point. I just wonder if something as simple as glancing at the radio could cause you to miss it. Or never actually seeing the light change, as I'm sure that's what catches one's attention more than anything. Especially if it's in a weird location (mounted directly on the pole to the side, for example), or a noticeably different shade of red that you're not used to.

Definitely in unfamiliar territory, driving without focusing on how your surroudings are different will cause you to miss or nearly miss lights and signs. ANd some of this stuff is local knowledge like knowing particularly crappy or sneaky intersections and sudden speed limit drops.

Quite true, yeah. I couldn't begin to tell you how many times I've gone into a mild panic after realizing I either forgot or never saw the speed limit for unfamiliar roads.

I think that happened to me once. I went through a light and didn't think nothing of it, later when I looked in my mirror everyone else had stopped!
I also once did that to a stop sign.
